Babel and a Language Problem on Our Journey to Christmas

We take a moment to see how a culture reverses the march to Christmas, to the coming of Christ.  We pretend we have better or more sophisticated distinctions than ancient Babel, yet it is still our tongue that divides human souls.  James, the brother of John the apostle, observed how small a fire sets ablaze even a great mass of wood and that the tongue is that fire.

The tongue of Mary said “yes, behold the servant of the Lord.”  Contrary to that is everything from a smooth talking boy pretending genuine interest but looking more like Eden’s serpent, to the professor advocating infanticide.  Or think of the Christmas gatherings fractured by a tongue.

Arrest the tongue and we are back on track in our Advent anticipating Christmas.

The First Student of a New Culture of Life

Noah might be a surprising character to consider in getting ready for Christmas.  But a little hint, here… To Christians, every hero in what we call the Old Testament points to God intersecting human history by means of the ‘Messiah’, ‘the Christ’.   Put that way, even Jews see all such heroes pointing to the one great hero to come.  Others do a better job at pointing out these nuances.

What I will leave in this meditation on Advent are the implications for those who consider protecting human life to be itself a heroic undertaking today.  When God makes peace with Noah in a covenant, he doesn’t stop at setting the rainbow in the sky.  Genesis chapter 9 lays out two simple ideas for Noah and those after him.  First, Noah was told we are to be fruitful and fill the earth with the goodness of human life. And secondly, because we are made in the image of God, we are not to return to the taking of innocent life that plagued the culture destroyed in the flood.

As we get ready for a baby to come into the world in Bethlehem, we must remember that whether it was Noah’s time, or Jesus time (think King Herod who wanted to kill this baby) or our time, new life must be protected and offered a culture for that protection and nurture.  Christmas takes us to that culture, a culture of life.

Adam Lost in the Garden Passive – Monday in Advent’s First Week

Human souls do not always anticipate God. This idea of Advent or anticipating what God might do is often foreign to us. A few actually run full tilt away from at least what they think God represents. But most of us who avoid God do so by simply being passive – passive, just like our first father, Adam. In the story of the first garden, in Eden, when the serpent was tricking Eve, where was Adam? He was right there. But he was passive, standing by while the dialogue of pain and separation from God was being woven. The serpent did not so much merely lie as much as he used truth to hide lying.

Maybe you’ve heard the line, “God is watching, so look busy!” Cute line, maybe, but it doesn’t actually work. This Advent, know that we have an alternative to being passive or keeping busy that actually works. It has to do with the object of our Advent, Christ coming into the world. For now, in Advent, maybe it’s enough to simply remember that being passive never was the right answer. Passivity ignores those around us who deserve our attention, it robs us of truly experiencing life, and deprives God of the fertile soil of our lives. It takes away or at least diminishes our capability to put our heart into life and love. It can even make us a sucker for hidden lies.
